Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) let slip a damning Freudian slip during a recent public appearance, one that left one political analyst’s jaw on the floor.
Fetterman recently appeared at The Texas Tribune Festival, where he accidentally called himself a “lifelong Republican,” a remark that drew laughter from the audience. He made the remark at a time when Democrats quietly fear Fetterman may be a wildcard for the party following the consequential 2026 midterm elections.
Mike Nellis, a Democratic strategist, reacted to Fetterman’s comments in a new podcast episode Sunday. Nellis described it as the “most insane Freudian slip” of any public official that he had heard.
“This guy is clearly playing a game, and he thinks he’s clever, but we can see right through this ruse,” Nellis said.
Fetterman has been a thorn in Democrats’ side throughout President Donald Trump’s second term. The senator voted against Democratic priorities in at least 20% of his votes in Congress in 2025, according to an analysis by Newsweek. “No senator of either party voted against their own party more often than Fetterman did,” the analysis reads in part.
At the same time, speculation has been swirling about whether Fetterman plans to switch parties after the midterms, which could blunt any potential gains for the Democrats in the Upper Chamber.
Nellis argued that Fetterman’s comments show he’s “made a corrupt deal” with the Trump administration.
“It’s all a big joke to people in the media …” Nellis said. “But this is a very serious thing.”
