FBI Director Kash Patel sparked confusion Sunday morning after sharing an infographic touting his job performance, in which the top Justice Department official boasted about the number of phone calls he’d made in his first 18 months on the job.
“This is what happens when you pick up the phone,” Patel wrote, along with an infographic that claimed he made 101 phone calls to “foreign partners.”
Critics were quick to do the math, and noted that 101 calls over 18 months worked out to barely more than one call a week.
“101 calls in 18 months is roughly 1.3 calls per week. Somebody get this man a commemorative plaque,” wrote Alex Cole, a progressive political commentator and writer. “Kash made a campaign-style graphic because he used the telephone.”
Patel has faced renewed calls to resign following the recent release of FBI records that revealed his fixation on responding to online critics. He’s also faced scrutiny for his alleged abuse of government resources, which include using an FBI Gulfstream luxury jet to attend his then 26-year-old girlfriend’s music performances, as well as for his handling of the release of Jeffrey Epstein-related files.
“What the hell is this garbage? ‘I make phone calls!’ Okay bro,” wrote New York attorney Damin Toell in a social media post on X.
Former FBI agent Kyle Seraphin quipped that it was “amazing” that Patel was “praising himself for using a phone,” sarcastically writing that the FBI director “also uses the big boy potty all by himself… and is sometimes successful!”
Patel, 46, also received scrutiny for firing an FBI veteran whom he accused of leaking details about his controversial trips to see his 27-year-old girlfriend, Alexis Wilkins, to the media. He’s also been accused of instructing an FBI SWAT team to protect Wilkins, and of ordering FBI agents to drive his girlfriend’s “inebriated” friend home.
