Are You Ready for Your ‘Winter Arc’?

I was talking to my sister on the phone earlier this month when she told me she was getting ready to make some life changes.

I was puzzled. It seemed as if she were acting on New Year’s resolutions four months early. What was the rush? She explained that she was getting a leg up on her “winter arc.”

A “winter arc” — or a “fall rebrand,” depending on whom you ask — is a self-improvement challenge that bubbles up on social media around this time of year. Participants create a plan to get a head start on their personal goals before the year is over. That could mean starting a new diet or a fitness plan, setting new saving goals or switching up a beauty regimen.

So, why are adults tasking themselves with stringent routines ahead of a season celebrated for its hot, boozy ciders, decadent desserts and cozy holiday cheer?

After 12 years of school schedules, many people naturally view August or September as a new beginning — perhaps even a more meaningful one than January.

Kaylee Malcolm, a 24-year-old college student living in Pittsburgh, said that, during the summer, she has been able to count on spontaneous plans with friends, like frozen yogurt runs or mini-golf meet-ups, to help keep her social. When those impromptu get-togethers begin to dry up during the fall and winter months, though, being deliberate about how she spends her time is crucial.

“It’s just the urge to want to add something else to your routine and to avoid that seasonal depression of things slowing down,” she said.

Her generation has “a hard time slowing down,” she added, “so when it gets to winter time, I think routine and structure really helps.”

For Malcolm, that looks like doing her school work at a cafe or a library instead of at home, working out with her fiancé at the gym or meal prepping. Before embarking on her first “winter arc” last year, she said she had very few hobbies by the time winter rolled around.

Much of her time, she said, was spent “just scrolling on my phone and having no structure, and then just wondering why I feel sad,” she said.

On TikTok, content creators announce their winter arcs or fall rebrand plans with varying degrees of self-seriousness, often outlining guidelines for others who wish to join them. Lorraine Kamesha of Atlanta, who makes videos focusing on middle-age lifestyle content, recently started a fall rebrand accountability group for people over 40.

“This is the best time to get it together so you can pop out Jan. 1 a whole new woman,” she says in one of her videos.

In an interview, Kamesha, 42, said that, for her fall rebrand, she was committing to walking at least 8,000 steps a day and giving up alcohol as she navigated perimenopause. Though fall and winter are times when we’re meant to slow down and “stock up,” she said her intention was not to reject those goals, but instead to pursue them in “a healthy way.”

Maybe, she said, rather than “a pumpkin spice latte that’s 500 calories and looks like a milkshake,” that could mean eating more of these hearty, healthy soups that are high protein, high fiber, they don’t have a ton of excess oils.”

For Elizabeth Dampier, 27, who works in marketing in Madison, Miss., her winter arc serves as a way to ease into January with a routine already in place.

“Getting started earlier just feels like a natural progression to get out ahead of it, to not have to put so much pressure when the new year comes,” she said.
