Eric Trump posted a photo of himself dipping his wife, Lara Trump, in a formal hallway, and critics quickly compared the couple to Gilded Age elites and French royalty.
The president’s son shared the photo late on Wednesday. In it, Eric Trump wears a tuxedo and Lara Trump is bent backward in a sequined gown, holding a silver clutch. The post had more than 1.7 million views by Saturday, and many of the replies focused on the price of gas and diesel.
Jackie Calmes, a national columnist for the Los Angeles Times who used to report from Washington for the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, replied with a well-known line from “The Great Gatsby.”
“They were careless people, Tom and Daisy — they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made,” she wrote.
The account Shipwreck took a line often attributed to Marie Antoinette: “Let them eat cake.”
American Muckrakers added a number to it.
“Let them eat $5 gas & $7 diesel,” the account wrote. “I can’t wait until they exile in Dubai.”
CNN commentator S.E. Cupp wrote, “Diesel prices in Iowa have doubled in the last year.”
X user Vance Murphy wrote, “The American people are on life support. The Trump family could not be more tone deaf.”
Conservative attorney and longtime Trump critic George Conway reposted a user called Conservative Girl, who wrote sarcastically, “Oh, you perfectly nailed this pic. Everyday Americans are definitely gonna relate to this.”
Conway also reposted a reply from another account that called the photo “Soooooooo staged” and “Soooooooo thirsty for attention.”
