White House lashes out over ‘highly dishonest’ attacks on controversial Trump ad

The White House lashed out Friday at criticism of a television ad praising President Donald Trump that was paid for by the U.S. government.

“The attacks on President Donald J. Trump’s public service announcements are highly dishonest,” the White House said in a statement. “The announcements are very clearly not campaign ads.”

The administration added that Trump is not on the ballot and that the ad has no call to action. The White House described the TV spot as a reminder for Americans “to love their country and know why it’s worth defending — at home, at the border, and abroad.”

“That’s not partisanship — that’s a government that still believes in the country it serves,” the statement said.

The ad, which has aired on Fox News, raised eyebrows after viewers noticed a disclosure stating that it was “paid for by the U.S. government.” Critics, including Democrats on Capitol Hill, have questioned whether it potentially broke any laws.

But the White House on Friday pointed to public information campaigns under Presidents George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Joe Biden — ranging from Medicare and Obamacare advertising to public health messaging. It also cited government ads dating back to Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D. Roosevelt.

“When prior Administrations utilized the airwaves, it was called ‘public education,’” the White House said. “When this Administration promotes pride in our country, many of those same voices call it ‘propaganda.’”

“Patriotism isn’t partisan,” it added. “These public service announcements are unapologetically American, clearly disclosed, and aimed at the country — not a line on the ballot.”
