Iran says it has given Trump administration new proposal for peace talks

UNITED NATIONS — Iran has given the Trump administration a proposal that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz and restart talks over an end to the broader war within seven days, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Thursday.

The proposal was delivered to U.S. officials when the sides met through mediators this week, Araghchi told reporters on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

President Donald Trump referred to the meeting in his address to the body on Tuesday. Tehran could make a deal to end the conflict, he said, or face “annihilation.” The Iranian delegation walked out of the chamber.

Addressing the General Assembly the next day, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said, “Iran must be powerful so as to avoid being threatened, to avoid its future being threatened.”

“We are ready for dialogue and diplomacy and negotiations without accepting the language of force,” he said.

Trump has said he launched the war on Iran with Israel to keep it from obtaining nuclear weapons. Pezeshkian on Thursday said the country has a right to develop “peaceful nuclear technologies” and repeated Tehran’s long-standing claim that it would not seek nuclear weapons.

It is unclear whether the Iranian proposal will meet current U.S. demands to end the war. Araghchi said it was similar to the memorandum of understanding the sides agreed upon in June. But Tehran interpreted that deal as giving Iran control over the strait, the chokepoint through which one-fifth to a quarter of the world’s oil ordinarily flows, a condition the United States and its allies in the region have rejected.

“The conditions we asked are nothing new,” Araghchi said.

After Israel and the U.S. attacked Iran in late February, Iran mined the strait and warned vessels against attempting to transit without coordinating with Tehran. Traffic through the waterway slowed to a trickle, driving up energy prices worldwide.

“A world without power is dangerous,” Pezeshkian told the General Assembly on Wednesday. “But a world that only understands the language of war and bullying will not be safe.”
