A University of Mississippi student claims she was spiked on a night out before being discovered passed out in the hallway of her dorm – just days before two college kids were found dead.
Mary Harvey said Wednesday people are “scared to leave their dorm rooms” in light of the deaths of two men, 18 and 20, which have left the 28,400-strong student population reeling.
Harvey headed to a bar to watch the Ole Miss Rebels football team play against longtime rivals Louisiana State University in Saturday’s Magnolia Bowl contest, but she said she had “no recollection” of what happened afterwards.
“Around the time when the game ended, I do not remember a single thing. I was told by a boy that was there that I fell down,” she explained to Fox News Digital.
Harvey, a freshman, was put in an Uber and taken to her dorm before going “missing.”
“My roommate got in the shower and she said while she was in the shower, I went missing,” Harvey said.
“She left the dorm to find me and was searching everywhere, searched every floor. But on her way back from searching, she found me passed out in the hall of my dorm.”
In a post on her Facebook page, Harvey claimed she was “spiked” and reiterated that she had “no recollection of the night at all.”
Harvey is not the only student left terrified by the tragedies.
“It’s very scary,” biology sophomore Jay Van Dyke told WLOX. “It is like you can’t even know what you can trust. What is safe to do. You just almost want to stay inside and that is silly.”
Raven Tunstall, another student, branded the two deaths a “big shock.”
“We have so much life ahead of us,” Tunstall told the outlet. “College is supposed to be where we grow and make new experiences. It’s not supposed to be where our lives end.”
Lafayette County Coroner Glenn Coleman told the Clarion Ledger that one student was found inside his dorm on campus and the other in his off-campus home Monday.
Packaged kratom sold from a retail store was found during the two separate death investigations, but Lafayette County Metro Narcotics said it does “not have confirmed information indicating that kratom or any other substance was a contributing factor in either death.”
“Out of an abundance of caution, we encourage everyone to avoid kratom and any other medication or substance that was not prescribed to you or obtained from a trusted, regulated source,” the squad said in a statement.
The student’s toxicology results are expected within two to three weeks, Coleman told the Ledger.
“The University is heartbroken by the recent loss of two students and extends our condolences to their families, friends and loved ones during this difficult time,” Dr. Shawnboda Mead, the university’s vice chancellor for student affairs, said.
The Post has approached the University of Mississippi’s police and campus safety team for comment.
