A new poll delivered bad news for President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans, but CNN’s Harry Enten warned Democratic congressional leaders in Congress have a serious problem with their own voters.
The last time Democrats were trying to win back the U.S. House, in 2018, the party’s voters gave their congressional leaders a net approval rating of plus-19 points, but now it’s minus-12, representing a 31-point drop.
“The call is coming from inside the house,” Enten said. “Democrats, on their own leaders, they don’t like their own leaders. I dare say they despise their own leaders.”
“What a different world that we are in right now,” he added.
The biggest drag, he said, is Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, whose net favorability among Democrats was plus-28 points in 2018 and plus-33 in 2020, the year Democrats last won the Senate, but a Marquette University Law School poll released earlier this month put him at minus-5 among members of his own party.
“These are no bueno,” Enten said. “Democrats hate Chuck Schumer.”
Enten said that makes Schumer the least popular Democratic Senate leader among Democrats since at least 1985, when polling on Senate leaders began. He noted that Schumer’s weak numbers with the overall electorate are not unusual, but his weak numbers with Democrats are.
“You just don’t ever see these types of numbers among Democrats, who usually like their own leaders,” he said.
The slump is showing up on the campaign trail, Enten said, as many Democratic Senate candidates either avoid questions about whether they want Schumer to remain leader or say outright that they don’t.
“This is a guy who’s been the Dem Senate leader for forever,” Enten said. “But at this point, if there’s going to be one time where, hey, maybe he should be worried about his job, it’s this leadership election coming up.”
