Vice President announced Tuesday that the Trump administration is kicking roughly 750,000 people off Obamacare while targeting hundreds of thousands more with investigations.
“We’re stopping Obamacare enrollment for about 750,000 people — 750,000 people who we believe are fraudulently enrolled in the program,” Vance said during remarks carried by C-SPAN. “That’s number one.”
Vance added that the administration will also begin conducting “additional verification” of approximately 419,000 other enrollees.
“We’re going to make sure that they are, first of all, legal residents of the United States of America,” he said. “And second of all, we’re going to make sure that they actually meet the income threshold requirements in order to receive these Obamacare benefits.”
Vance’s White House anti-task force is leading the purge from the Affordable Care Act exchanges, The Washington Post reported. The administration also plans to suspend brokers accused of improperly enrolling people for coverage.
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz also Tuesday announced a separate six-month moratorium on new Obamacare broker registrations.
“It has never been done before,” Oz said. “There will be no new brokers for Obamacare in this country for the next six months.”
About 19 million people are enrolled through the ACA exchanges, according to the Washington Post. Enrollment has already fallen by more than 1 million since Trump returned to office and is expected to drop by millions more this year, the outlet added.
“Democrats and some health policy experts have argued that Trump’s policies, including ending coronavirus-era subsidies that widely lowered the cost of ACA coverage, have forced people off the program and put them at risk of losing access to care,” the Post said.
