President Trump met with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron Monday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The two world leaders discussed the wars in Iran and Ukraine during their meeting at Trump Tower in Midtown Manhattan, according to the French president.
“We decided to act together to ease tensions in the energy markets, by protecting critical infrastructure in the Middle East and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz,” Macron wrote on X.
“We will also pool our efforts to secure a moratorium on strikes against energy infrastructure and against Ukrainian civilian infrastructure,” he added. “Civilian populations must be protected, and we must initiate as soon as possible a serious negotiation on the conditions for peace between Russia and Ukraine.”
Macron also shared a photograph and his handshake with Trump. The pair have a long history of intense, tug-of-war handshakes dating back to Trump’s first term.
The French president told reporters after the meeting that his discussion with Trump was “very good” and “very constructive,” according to Reuters.
“We had a lengthy discussion on Ukraine and Russia, the need to help our Ukrainian friends more quickly and more strongly in terms of interceptors, because that is the key issue from a defensive point of view,” Macron said.
Trump and Macron are both slated to address world leaders and diplomats at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.
The president’s meeting with Macron came just hours after he met with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion.
Trump is also scheduled to meet with Gulf Arab leaderson the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, according to Axios.
The White House did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
