Massive Northern California vineyard goes up for sale after Canada booze ban

A massive family-run California winery has fallen victim to Canada’s ban on booze imports — listing 11 vineyards amounting to 3,500 acres for sale as a wave of bankruptcies and closures rock the industry.

McManis Family Vineyards, a 36-year-old winery business, is offloading its main facility and vineyards as it faces a steep decline in its export business, the Sacramento Bee reported.

The company is offering its real estate assets for $22 million, according to an online listing, with 11 individual vineyards across San Joaquin and Sacramento counties ranging in price from $800,000 to $14 million.

“It was a very hard decision for myself and my family,” Ron McManis, president and co-owner of the company, told the Bee in a statement.

The firm once did brisk business exporting wines to Canada, mostly Ontario, as well as growing and crushing grapes for bulk production. Sales to American’s northern neighbor formerly made up 40% of its export sales, the paper reported.

Much of that evaporated when Canadian provinces slapped bans on American booze in response to President Donald Trump’s tariffs on the country.

The sale is only the latest sign of turmoil in the California wine industry, which is struggling with a combination of falling booze consumption, rising costs and excess inventory. Modesto-based Gallo, one of the country’s largest winemakers, revealed plans in June to shutter a San Joaquin crush facility and lay off 20 employees in June. Jason Smith, CEO of Valley Farm Management, said last monthhe sold his land and set fire to vineyards because they were no longer worth maintaining. “There’s literally no way for me to make money,” the 57-year-old Smith told the New York Times. Wine sales have plunged over the past two decades as Americans have grown more health-conscious about the risks of alcohol and Gen Z drinkers increasingly favor alternatives like hard seltzer.

Fifty-four percent of American adults said they drank alcohol in an October 2025 Gallup poll — the lowest percentage since Gallup began tracking the stat in 1939.
