  • June Squibb, 96, says she still feels 35 years old inside.
  • “I think it’s because I remember my mother at 35,” the actor said.
  • The “Nebraska” star stays active with Pilates and walking, and aspires to reach 100 years old.

At 96, June Squibb says she feels as young as ever on the inside.

“I always feel I’m 35. I don’t know what I felt when I was younger than 35, but as I got older, I kept referring back to 35,” Squibb said during an appearance on Tuesday’s episode of “Good Hang with Amy Poehler.”

The actor, known for her roles in “Nebraska” and “About Schmidt,” said it was an age she associated with her mother’s prime.

“I think it’s because I remember my mother at 35. There was something very grand about her at 35, which I did not always find as she got older or even younger than that. But somehow, my mother at 35 was great,” Squibb told podcast host Amy Poehler.

Squibb also doesn’t want to be boxed in by her age or anyone’s idea of it. While she knows younger people often expect wisdom from someone older, she said that’s never really been her thing.

“They know they’re not going to get it. So, they don’t. They don’t ask that at all from me in any way,” Squibb said, adding that she doesn’t pay attention to the ages of people she interacts with.

“If I like someone, I don’t think I ever think in terms of how old they are, you know,” she added.

Even so, Squibb said that longevity offers its own kind of perspective.

“I can remember being worried about things, and again, it passed, and I hope that’s what happens with us now. It too will pass,” she said. “I’ve seen a lot pass, let’s just say this.”

Her fitness routine involves doing Pilates once a week and taking regular walks. “I try not to just sit all the time,” she said.

It’s a steady routine that keeps her moving — and, she hopes, keeps her going all the way to 100.

“My agents say I’ll still be working,” Squibb added.

She’s not the only Hollywood veteran reflecting on what it takes to age well.

Dick Van Dyke, 99, said his secret to living a long life is going to the gym three times a week.

“Most people at 98 years old don’t really feel like working out, and they seize up, you know? You get stiff, and I still, you know, move pretty well,” he told Entertainment Tonight in 2024. “And I think that must be the secret because I don’t really watch my diet or anything. Stayed skinny. That helps.”

Jane Fonda, 87, said she tries to exercise every day, and her workout routine has remained largely unchanged over the years.

“I essentially do everything I used to do, just slower,” Fonda told People in January. “I used to be a runner, but now I love walking. I love being outdoors in the woods, especially up and down hills.”
