The host of MS NOW’s “Money, Power, Politics” burst into laughter when President Donald Trump’s ongoing court battle over his so-called “weaponization” fund was equated with the 1994 film “Dumb and Dumber” by a legal analyst.
Speaking with MS NOW’s Fallon Gallagher about a court hearing in Virginia contesting whether the controversial cash giveaway proposal was truly dead, host Stephanie Ruhle began, “You may remember the weaponization fund. Remember that thing that was the taxpayer fund created to compensate people who claim they were targeted by the government like the January 6th rioters?”
“But after receiving huge bipartisan backlash, Attorney General Todd Blanche said during his confirmation hearing that this thing was dead. So my question is: why is it back? Why are we having this hearing today?” she asked.
“So, Steph, you know, that famous movie quote in this scene in ‘Dumb and Dumber,’ you have Jim Carrey and he’s talking to the love interest and he’s like, ‘So you’re telling me there’s a chance? Are you saying there’s a chance?’” Gallagher told the laughing Ruhle.
“Do I remember it? It’s one of my favorite movies,” Ruhle interjected.
“That’s exactly what — well, that’s what that’s all I can think about this week with this case,” Gallagher continued. “And that is because you have the attorney general who says that he killed the fund but left a bunch of loopholes. You have the Department of Justice asking this judge today to dismiss the case, which would remove the only legal roadblock.”
“But here’s the real kicker,” she elaborated. “Back in June, when she blocked this fund, she gave the Department of Justice a get-out-of-jail-free card. She said, if you file a declaration under penalty of perjury, that you’re not going to move forward with this fund in any way, shape or form, I’ll dismiss this case. They didn’t do that. And yet we’re back here in court today, and they’re asking her to dismiss the case.”
