Lena Dunham and her husband, Luis Felber, are now a family of three.
The couple announced they welcomed their first child via surrogate in September 2026.
The actress and the British musician have been married since 2021 and have not been shy about showing the world their love for each other.
Page Six is taking a look back at their relationship as the couple enter their parenthood era.
Chance encounter
In 2009, when Dunham was an up-and-coming writer and actress, a man stole her attention when her first film was premiering at SXSW.
The “Girls” creator revealed in a 2024 Instagram post, that she believes the mystery man was her now-husband.
At the time, she saw a gaggle of British men — including one “wearing a French military coat, his black hair wild, drunkenly leading the others down the street.”
“He smiled – at me, or in my general direction?” she wrote. “I never forgot it – I don’t know why, since I’ve seen a lot of boys, in a lot of places, and very few of them imprinted on me in any real way.”
Twelve years later, Dunham officially met Felber.
“I’ve said it before, but Lu was immediately familiar to me. I chalked it up to the warm glow of healthy connection,” she gushed.
Years later, the two were clearing out Felber’s closet when he pulled out the French military coat similar to the one the man in Austin was wearing.
“And there it was – the military jacket, long, slim with the gleaming brass buttons, the epaulets,” she wrote. “It was him. The beautiful boy. Now, my beautiful boy.”
Blind date
In a September 2021 interview with the New York Times, Felber revealed that he and Dunham officially first met on a blind date arranged by a mutual friend a few months prior.
The Young Turks label founder told the outlet that he went into the date “quite open” and Dunham liked that, because she is “the same” way.
Felber said that he and Dunham “didn’t stop talking for, like, eight hours,” and that the relationship escalated quickly.
“I’ve only been alive for 35 years in this lifetime, and I think it’s another archaic thing for guys to hide their feelings,” Felber said. “And I think — I’m going to sound cheesy — but when you find your soul mate, you just know.”
While Felber admitted he had never heard of Dunham before the two started dating, his mom was a fan of “Girls” and the two immediately hit it off, despite his mom being “shy.”
“With Lena she was just, like, best friends,” Felber gushed. “She was very open about her emotions and they just love each other. My dad as well.”
Although the two haven’t shared too much about the early days of their relationship, the couple co-created the Netflix series “Too Much,” which was based on their love story.
“We feel really, really lucky that we got to do this together, and then of course the actors come in and the characters become different because the actors have taken over,” Dunham told the Hollywood Reporterlast summer of the “semi-autobiographical” series which premiered in July 2025.

The “Tiny Furniture” star confirmed her relationship with Felber on June 9, 2021 — two days after Page Six exclusively revealed her boyfriend’s identity.
Her post was a sweet birthday tribute to the songwriter on his 35th birthday.
“When I was 3 weeks old in downtown Manhattan, I had no idea a baby was being born in England (Winchester, no less!) who would rocket into my life — wearing a lime green polar fleece snood — and challenge so many of my beliefs about myself and the world with magical abandon.”
The “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” actress shared the first photos of her and her beau, including a few of them snuggling up with their dog.
Red carpet debut
Two months after confirming their relationship, the pair made their red carpet debutat the Sundance Film Festival in London in August.
The lovebirds looked cozy as they posed for photos at the “Zola” screening.
At one point, Felber was snapped giving Dunham a sweet kiss on the forehead.
In another photo, Dunham stared lovingly at her man with a big grin plastered across her face.
Wedding bells
Dunham and Felber tied the knoton September 25, 2021.
The intimate nuptials were held at Union Club in London’s Soho under strict COVID-19 protocols because of Dunham’s various health issues.
At the time, Page Six exclusively reported that the bride’s longtime friend Taylor Swift was the guest of honor at the secret London wedding.
Although the pop star didn’t perform a tune, insiders told us she did make a heartwarming speech.
“Lena and Luis wanted to keep it very small and intimate, just for them and their closest family and friends,” a source told us.
Nuptial details
Days after marrying Felber, Dunham dished on their “impromptu” wedding, and revealed they had only been engaged for one month.
“I was trying to parse it, and we were sort of talking about it, but talking around it,” she told Vogue of their engagement. “So we just cut the 10 years down to 10 hours. And then we took a month to get married instead of waiting six months or a year.”
Dunham confirmed they tied the knot in front of about 60 guests and her bridesmaids included Swift, alongside actors Myha’la Herrold and Tommy Dorfman, pal Rosa Mercuriadis, cousin Jenna Hally Rubenstein, Felber’s sister, Alma-Kori Felber, and Dunham’s podcasting partner, Alissa Bennett.
“You can have a far bigger wedding with less bridesmaids, but I guess it just speaks to how excited I was to have my close friends there,” the Golden Globe winner gushed.
“My girlfriends have had to deal with a lot of not-so-happy things with me in our adulthood, so to be able to celebrate something joyful and use it as an excuse to be together was very special.”
The bride wore three custom dresses designed by Christopher Kane, while her groom wore a custom blue suede suit by Emily Bode.
Family planning
In June 2025, Dunham told The Times that she and Felber were planning to expand their family.
“I will say we’re in the process of expanding our family in new ways,” she shared. “I want to safely meet our children and then figure out how to talk about it.”
Dunham has been open about medical issues with her reproductive system. In 2017, at the age of 31, she had a hysterectomy due to severe endometriosis, a painful condition where tissue grows outside the uterus.
She told the outlet that her hysterectomy “was a grief but it was also a relief.”
“I thought I would have the opportunity to experience my fertility and my cycle waning and it never was. Instead it was a very quick, sharp cut-of.”
In April, the “Famesick” author talked about how she grieved the possibility of never becoming a mom after her hysterectomy.
“In the moment, my pain was so overriding that I put those other thoughts aside, and it was only in the aftermath of the surgery that I started to feel the weight of what had happened,” she said on “Today with Jenna and Sheinelle.”
She added, “Some people don’t dream about being mothers, but I had, and it was a big part of my identity that I was going to do it someday in that way.”
First time parents
Dunham announced the news of her and Felber’s daughter on September 16, 2026 in a op-ed in Vogue.
The producer shared that the embryo transfer happened in November and detailed her relationship with the surrogate.
“The feelings I thought would be there somehow weren’t: namely jealousy, that this woman could do for a child—for my child—what I could not,” she wrote.
“Instead, I felt a different kind of jealousy—toward said baby, for the chance to be tucked into someone who radiated such safety. I could just tell she knew how to steer an SUV in the snow.”
Dunham confirmed her daughter arrived almost two weeks past her due date.
“I saw her face, gasping just as she did. Her eyes, wide and unfocused, taking in the light and shadow, blinking rapidly.”
Her first words to her daughter were, “Hello. I’m your mama. You look nothing like I thought you would, but exactly right. We’ve been waiting for you, do you know that? It was so nice of you to come.”
