Man Charged With Attempted Murder in Shooting of Jets Player Kris Boyd

A 20-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder in the shooting of Kris Boyd, a New York Jets player, outside a Manhattan nightclub last month, the police said on Tuesday.

The man, Frederick Green of the Bronx, who had evaded authorities for three weeks, was picked up near Buffalo on Monday by members of the U.S. Marshals Service and brought back to Manhattan, according to law enforcement officials.

Mr. Green was also charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon, the police said. As of Tuesday afternoon, he was the only person charged in the shooting and his arraignment was pending. It was not immediately clear whether he had a lawyer.

A spokeswoman for the Jets did not respond to a request for comment.

On Nov. 16, just after 2 a.m., Mr. Boyd and three friends were leaving dinner at Sei Less, a club on West 38th Street near Seventh Avenue, when they were approached by a group of about five men, Joseph Kenny, the Police Department’s chief of detectives, said at a briefing last month.

The men began to mock the clothing worn by Mr. Boyd, 29, and his friends, including his teammates Irvin Charles and Jamien Sherwood, Chief Kenny said. They did not appear to know that Mr. Boyd, Mr. Charles and Mr. Sherwood were professional football players.

A fight ensued, and Mr. Green shot Mr. Boyd in the abdomen, the police said. Mr. Boyd and his friends were not armed, Chief Kenny said.

Mr. Green then sprinted toward a white BMW parked nearby and jumped inside as dozens of people ran into the street, according to the police and Chief Kenny.

Emergency workers took Mr. Boyd to Bellevue Hospital, Chief Kenny added. Soon after, doctors discovered that the bullet had traveled to Mr. Boyd’s lung and was lodged in his pulmonary artery.

Aaron Glenn, the head coach of the Jets, said at a recent news conference that Mr. Boyd had since visited the team.

“It was good to see him in good spirits,” Mr. Glenn said, according to a video of the news conference posted on social media last Friday.

The high-profile crime came amid a downward trend in shootings this year in New York. Between Jan. 1 and Dec. 1, the city had the lowest number of shooting incidents and victims since 1994, the Police Department announced on Monday.

In the Midtown South police precinct, where Mr. Boyd was shot, major crime decreased about 9 percent between Jan. 1 and Dec. 7 this year compared with the same period in 2024, according to police data. The number of shootings in the precinct was also down: There were just three during that time, compared with six in the same period last year.

Mr. Green has been arrested at least four times in New York City, according to an internal police report.

In February, he was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, the report said. Five months later, he was charged with unlawful possession of an identification card. The outcomes of those cases are unclear because they are sealed.
