A former California mail carrier faces up to five years behind bars after allegedly finessing over 8,500 pieces of undelivered mail.

Ronald Juckno –– a 53-year-old man from Fresno –– who worked for the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) was arrested on Friday following an indictment.

“According to court records, between August and September 2024, Juckno was found in possession of more than 8,500 pieces of mail that he had held onto and failed to deliver to his customers,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California said on Monday.

“The mail included sensitive items such as California EDD correspondence, financial records, insurance records, medical correspondence, tax records, and utility bills. He was placed on leave and then resigned his position as a mail carrier shortly after this discovery,” the office added on.

The 53-year-old may face a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000. He is set to make an initial court appearance today.

Back in 2022, a 33-year-old man named Stephen Glover from Palmdale was sentenced to 41 months in jail for attempting to steal over $250,000 in unemployment insurance (UI) funds by “making false claims of COVID-related job losses” and “stealing UI debit cards intended for other people on his mail route.”

33 people were also charged in 2016 for stealing mail and failing to deliver about 50,000 pieces of mail. One woman named Sherry Naomi Watanabe from the Sawtelle District had over 48,000 pieces of mail at her home while another Los Angeles man tried to steal PayPal debit cards from the mail.

Most of the people charged in that case were former USPS workers.
