Rhea Seehorn Wins Her First Emmy for ‘Pluribus’

After being shut out by the Emmys during her six-season run as the tight-lipped lawyer Kim Wexler in AMC’s “Better Call Saul,” Rhea Seehorn finally hoisted a statuette on Monday night.

Seehorn, 54, won best actress in a drama for her performance as a successful author and chronic malcontent, Carol Sturka, in Apple TV’s sci-fi drama “Pluribus.” The show, the brainchild of Vince Gilligan, the creator of “Breaking Bad,” is about the mysterious arrival of peace on Earth — and the one woman who can’t stand it.

“Thank you, Vince Gilligan, for giving me not only the role of a lifetime, but for creating sets where we all get to collaborate and we are actually made to feel safe to take risks so that we get better as artists,” an emotional Seehorn said from the stage as she accepted the award.

Seehorn’s Emmy is her first in four nominations; she received two for “Better Call Saul” and one in 2022 for playing a tough Hollywood boss in the short-form comedy series “Cooper’s Bar.” Seehorn is in almost every scene of “Pluribus,” which for long stretches is effectively a one-woman show. The New York Times’s chief television critic James Poniewozik described her performance as “enormous, in quality and quantity.”

Seehorn’s character, Carol, is a person who is told she should be happy but fights hard to have the freedom not to be.

“I think about ‘Brave New World,’” Seehorn told The Times in 2025. “I think about even ‘Fahrenheit 451’ and Neil Postman’s essays in his book ‘Amusing Ourselves to Death,’ when he talks about the real threat is that we would come to love our oppressors instead of revolting — that everybody was just happy.”

The series, which was initially given a two-season order, is reportedly set to begin filming the second season this fall. Seehorn’s nomination was one of 18 the show received overall, including for best drama, best directing for Gilligan, best supporting actor for Carlos-Manuel Vesga, and best supporting actress for Karolina Wydra.

Seehorn faced tough competition, beating out Zendaya, a two-time winner, who was nominated for the final season of “Euphoria,” as well as Carrie Coon (“The Gilded Age”), Chase Infiniti (“The Testaments”) and Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”).
