President Donald Trump announced on social media Monday that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to stop striking each other’s energy infrastructure.
“Ukraine has agreed not to hit Russian Energy targets. Russia has agreed to do, likewise!” Trump wrote in the post, signed “President DJT.”
He did not detail how or when the arrangement was reached, who brokered it or what mechanism would enforce it, and he also claimed that conflict – and not his war in Iran – was to blame for rising global fuel costs.
“The World’s Diesel price rise is mostly caused by the Russia/Ukraine War, not Iran,” he posted.
Energy infrastructure has been a central target in the Russia-Ukraine war for years, with both sides accused of striking oil refineries, power plants, and fuel depots as a means of degrading the other’s economy and military logistics.
Ukraine has increasingly targeted Russian refineries with long-range drone strikes, a campaign Kyiv has credited with disrupting Russian fuel supplies, while Russia has repeatedly bombarded Ukraine’s power grid, particularly ahead of winter.
Neither the Kremlin nor Ukrainian officials had publicly confirmed Trump’s characterization of a mutual energy-target truce.
Trump’s claim comes as crude oil prices have climbed above $100 a barrel amid intensifying conflict in the region, which has added to inflationary pressure in the U.S. and complicated the White House’s economic messaging ahead of the midterms.
