Between streaming and cable, viewers have a seemingly endless variety of things to watch. Here is a selection of TV shows and specials that are airing or streaming this week, Sept. 14-20. Details and times are subject to change.
Live T.V.
It’s September, which means back to school, New York Fashion Week and a night to celebrate excellence in television. The 78th annual Emmy Awards will be broadcast live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and Mariska Hargitay is stepping into the host role. “The Pitt” has the most nominations, with “Hacks” following closely behind. Some winners were announced earlier this month, so we already know that “Summer House” didn’t walk away with any awards. Monday at 8 p.m. on NBC and streaming on Peacock.
Also live from Los Angeles: “Dancing With the Stars” is back for its 35th season with a two-night premiere. This year, Ciara Miller, Jenna Dewan, Julia Stiles and Giada De Laurentiis are a few of the stars competing for the mirrorball. And in the show’s second same-sex pairing, the reality star Sarah Jane Nader will be matched with the pro Hailey Bills. Tuesday and Wednesday at 8 p.m. on ABC and streaming on Disney+.
Murders and mob families.
In “Reacher,” the military police office Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) finds himself wrongfully accused of murder in a corrupt underworld. The new spinoff “Neagley” follows Frances Neagley (Maria Sten), Reacher’s protégée as she investigates the murder of an old friend. All eight episodes drop at the same time. Begins streaming Wednesday on Prime Video.
In his anthology series “Monster,” Ryan Murphy has peeled back the psyche of the infamous criminals, including Jeffrey Dahmer, the Menendez brothers and Ed Gein. “Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story” looks into the life of Borden (Ella Beatty), a wealthy white woman and active churchgoer who was tried and acquitted for the 1892 ax murder of her father and stepmother in what was called the trial of the century. Begins streaming Thursday on Netflix.
Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren are back as members of the Harrigan crime family for the second season of “MobLand.” When the show premiered in 2025, it broke the viewership record held by “Yellowstone” on the streaming platform Paramount+. Episodes will air weekly, and the show has already been renewed for a third season. Begins streaming Friday on Paramount+.
Rap music and social dynamics.
The competition show “The Traitors” has spawned over 40 iterations around the world, including India, Canada and New Zealand. The most recent American seasons have featured reality stars and celebrities, but this week is the premiere of the “New Blood” edition, which features contestants who have never been on television before. The game remains the same: a few people are named traitors and try to subtly defeat the faithfuls for a $250,000 prize. Thursday at 8 p.m. on NBC and streaming the next day on Peacock.
The rapper Jay-Z and the music producer Rick Rubin first formed a relationship in 2003 when Rubin produced Jay-Z’s song “99 Problems” for “The Black Album.” Now in an eight-part documentary entitled “Jay-Z in 8,” the two sit down together to discuss the inspiration behind some songs, including “Brooklyn’s Finest” and “Can’t Knock the Hustle.” The first two episodes will air back-to-back with subsequent episodes airing in pairs, weekly. Friday at 8 p.m. on HBO.
Sex forward and crime driven.
Sharon Horgan created and stars in the new series “Youth,” which follows Alex (Horgan), a 50-year-old, divorced literary agent in London who’s seeking out sex and romance while also trying to care for her teenage son and aging parents. Rupert Friend, Sharlene Whyte and Aran Murphy also star. Two episodes will premiere together, with new episodes coming out weekly until early November. Sunday at 10 p.m. on HBO.
“Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence,” a six-part series releasing this week, is a modern retelling about the titular crime detective duo played by Antonia Thomas (Tuppence) and Josh Dylan (Tommy) in London who grapple with crime and their relationship with each other. The story is based loosely on Christie’s 1922 novel “The Secret Adversary” and some of her other works. Begins streaming Tuesday on BritBox.
