Your super-durable sofa might be toxic

A couch that lasts 200 years? Sounds great in theory. But durability isn’t always a positive.

According to Jonsara Ruth, co-founder and executive design director of Healthy Materials Lab at the Parsons School of Design, many long-lasting, durable items in homes — such as insulation, flooring and fabrics — contain harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde and phthalates. Over time, these compounds can permeate the air or migrate into household dust. And when those items are discarded, chemicals can end up in the groundwater — and stay there for centuries.
