From a diamond necklace to a pair of gold hoops, a simple touch of jewelry has long been an easy way to add just a little something to any outfit.
But this fall, straightforward and understated styles seem to be taking a back seat to pieces with more personality.
That’s why Business Insider asked two jewelers and a stylist to share the trends they’re seeing take off this autumn and the ones that are starting to fade. Here’s what they said.
Men’s statement jewelry is on the rise.
Nishit Mehta, president and CEO of La Joya Jewelry, said he’s seeing men wear more expressive jewelry, including thicker rings with stones, as well as brooches.
JesseRay Vasquez, jewelry designer and the founder of the brand Nickho Rey, also said statement rings are an especially strong trend for men right now.
“I’ve never had this much of an interest from guys,” Vasquez told BI.
Color is showing up more.
This summer’s jewelry trends embraced plenty of color through beaded necklaces and other styles. And according to Kendra Sharpe, a stylist and founder of Kendra Sharpe Styling and Creative, that theme is continuing into fall.
However, she recommended shifting toward jewel tones, browns, and deeper purples to complement the new season.
Vasquez also said he’s seeing pops of bright color, specifically paired with classic metals like silver and white gold.
Statement cuffs can make any outfit pop.
According to Sharpe, statement cuffs are a growing trend. Part of their appeal is their simplicity: rather than stacking several smaller pieces of jewelry, wearing a single large cuff can stand out on its own.
“The larger the cuff, the better,” Sharpe told BI.
She also recommended experimenting styling options, like wearing the cuff over a long sleeve rather than directly on your wrist.
Pearls are getting bigger and more irregular.
Sharpe said pearls are trending this fall season, but with a fresher, less traditional feel. She told BI these iterations will be supersized, multistrand, more irregular, and natural-looking.
“I think the more unique the shape is, the better,” Sharpe said.
She also noted there are a variety of ways to wear pearls this fall, whether as a single pendant, a strand, or an uneven set of earrings.
Oversize pendant necklaces and collars are having a moment.
The experts told BI that oversize necklaces are trending this season — specifically large pendants that hang lower and create a dramatic look.
Vasquez said he’s seeing larger collar necklaces, in particular, gain popularity. These styles are typically bulkier than traditional link necklaces and can be layered with fine jewelry.
On the other hand, smooth metals are being replaced by textured materials.
Vasquez said he’s seeing a shift from smooth, polished metals to textured styles that add detail in unexpected ways.
He said the style can include faceted links, engraved swirls, or other dimensional details that add more interest to the jewelry.
Matching jewelry sets won’t be as popular.
Sharpe said perfectly matching your necklaces, rings, and earrings is starting to feel too safe for today’s more playful styles.
Instead, the stylist recommends thinking outside the box with asymmetrical or dramatic statement earrings, sculptural pieces, or unexpected textures.
Thicker engagement bands and large statement stones are replacing dainty rings.
Mehta said minimal, thin engagement bands are being replaced by chunkier, gold alternatives. He pointed to Miley Cyrus’ engagement ring as one celebrity example of this shift.
The jeweler also said he’s seeing less interest in halo settings with clusters of small stones, in favor of one large statement stone.
“People want one big statement stone that really catches attention, and it becomes a talking point,” Mehta told BI.
Rose gold is not as popular as it once was.
A few years ago, rose gold was having a major moment, but according to Sharpe, it’s not shining quite as brightly anymore.
Instead, she said people are leaning more into mixing yellow gold and silver to create more dimension — especially when wearing a monochromatic outfit.
