The U.S. average price for diesel hit a record high of $6.05 per gallon Friday, up more than 60 percent from one year ago, according to AAA.
The price is up from $5.85 one week ago, and it comes amid the ongoing U.S. war with Iran that has stretched past the six-month mark. The average price of a gallon of diesel one year ago was $3.70, according to AAA.
Higher diesel prices will put additional cost pressure on manufacturers and retailers and push up the cost of transporting goods, which could lead to higher prices for consumers.
The increase comes as the price for Brent crude, the global benchmark for oil, crossed the $100 mark Wednesday following fresh fighting between the U.S. and Iran in the Strait of Hormuz.
The elevated oil price is likely to push up prices at the pump further. On Friday the average price for gas was at $4.29 a gallon.
