President Donald Trump suggested he won’t actually need Congress to hand out his $5,000 “dividend” checks to voters in an interview with Fox News’ Laura Ingraham.
Trump promised at the first night of his Republican convention in Dallas that voters would receive these checks if Republicans retain control of Congress in November — but as Ingraham noted, Trump doesn’t even appear to have run this by GOP leadership in the House or Senate.
“Have you talked to Speaker Johnson or Thune about this $5,000 rebate or dividend?” asked Ingraham.
“I do speak to them,” said Trump. “We can do it. A lot of people think I don’t even need congressional approval because we have made so much money. On Intel, I said I want 10 percent of the company.”
“They’re calling that MAGA socialism,” Ingraham noted.
“It’s real entrepreneurship,” Trump replied.
Trump’s $5,000 dividend plan, which is reminiscent of previous unfulfilled plans to send Americans a check from his tariffs or the savings from DOGE, is estimated to cost as much as $1.3 trillion.
