President Donald Trump’s ban on certain products from Canada is the latest broadside in an escalating trade war between the two countries.
On Tuesday, Trump signed several proclamations relating to Canadian products, including alcohol, dairy and motorcycles. The new orders modify the scope of existing tariffs and introduce new bans on certain Canadian products.
The White House described the move as necessary to “better serve the public interest.” Last month, it announced 50 percent tariffs on several Canadian products after trade talks fell apart. Canada then retaliated with tariffs of its own, which took effect Tuesday, after Prime Minister Mark Carney pledged to match U.S. actions “dollar for dollar.”
Trump’s latest proclamations ban imports of several types of alcohol and dairy products and introduce 50 percent tariffs on various wood and metal products. The bans, which are due to come into effect this month, have been described by one trade expert as “unprecedented,” particularly given the decades of harmonious trade the two countries previously enjoyed.
Here’s a look at some of the products that will be affected.
Alcohol
The proclamation bans certain alcoholic drinks from Canada including malt beer, sparkling wine, vermouth and cider. Some spirits such as bourbon, rum, gin, vodka and tequila are also banned.
It’s not the first time alcohol has been used in a trade war between the two countries. In 2025, Canada retaliated against Trump’s tariffs by removing U.S. wine and spirits from government-run stores.
Dairy and molasses
Whey protein concentrates and molasses will be banned under the latest proclamation, while a 50 percent tariff will be applied to several cheeses such as cheddar, parmesan and blue-veined cheeses, as well as cheese substitutes.
Dairy products including milk and cream were already subject to tariffs announced last month.
Motorcycles and golf carts
Imports of motorcycles with a cylinder capacity over 800 cubic centimeters — the same class targeted in Canada’s tariffs on American motorcycles — are banned.
Golf carts and some motor vehicles will be subject to 50 percent tariffs, as will outboard motorboats with a length of 7.5 meters and over.
Aluminum and some metal products
Several metal products are set to be subject to a 50 percent tariff, such as iron or steel columns, aluminum alloy tubes and pipes, base metal hooks and eyes used on clothing, and buckles and clasps. Certain parts used in aircraft are excluded from the tariff.
Wood furniture and paper products
A 50 percent duty will be applied to products such as paper and cardboard for drawing, writing or graphic purposes. Bamboo and rattan seats, teak chairs and some office and kitchen furniture will also be affected.
Ice hockey gloves and sticks, skates with a permanently attached blade, and golf gear were already subject to tariffs.
Cement and salt
Trump said certain products will no longer face a 50 percent tariff previously imposed under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, including salt, cement, sugar, fishing rod parts and toilet tissue.
