Jeff D’Onofrio was named publisher and CEO of The Washington Post on Wednesday following a seven-month stint serving in an interim capacity.
Jeff Bezos, the owner of The Post, announced the decision in an email to staff.
“Jeff has led with discipline and care — following the data and sweating the details, and he has my complete confidence as we chart our future,” Bezos wrote.
The Post’s publisher position is one of the most revered jobs in American journalism and was the longtime seat of Katharine Graham.
D’Onofrio, a business executive who previously ran Tumblr and held senior positions at Yahoo, Google and Major League Baseball, joined The Post in June 2025 as chief financial officer. He succeeded William Lewis, who resigned in February after overseeing layoffs at the company, including the newsroom.
“The Washington Post will celebrate its 150th anniversary next year. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that we position it for the next 150 years, and I will be working with all of you to do just that,” D’Onofrio wrote in an email to Post staff.
He promised to build a “modern media company” that’s profitable and promised to reinvest profits in The Post’s journalism.
D’Onofrio’s appointment is a vote of confidence from Bezos following a rocky stretch for the newspaper, which has seen buyouts, layoffs and several leadership changes in recent years — most recently the departure of Opinion editor Adam O’Neal.
A Post spokesperson said that the company is on track to break even in 2026 and has sold 300,000 subscriptions so far this year.
