More than a week after a significant flash flood hit the Grand Canyon, search and rescuers are still combing the Colorado River and the national park looking for the last missing person: Timothy Smith, a beloved father of three from Granbury, Texas.
His wife, Carrie Smith, has been posting updates on Facebook chronicling the heartbreaking experience of each day feeling the same: anxiously awaiting any update and ending with no news about her husband.
On Tuesday, Carrie Smith said that “search and rescue teams are working long, hard, hot days to look for him.” She said her husband was supposed to return Wednesday from the trip “and we should be celebrating Tim’s birthday.”
Tim Smith was hiking in the Grand Canyon with two friends, whose bodies have been recovered, when the flood rushed through. Jessica Buscher, her younger sister, and their friend were also crossing the canyon that day.
Her group believes they saw Smith and the others. A group of three men were behind them before they entered the narrowest, deepest part of the canyon where there were no escape routes or high ground.
The three women barely made it out alive.
