MS NOW’s Jen Psaki identified a key talking point of Republicans for the midterms on Tuesday evening — and zeroed in on a candidate who blows that talking point to bits.
“The stage is now set, and the national political parties are telling us exactly how they want to frame the choice in this election,” said Psaki. She played clip after clip after clip of Republicans saying the new election is “common sense versus crazy,” with one saying it’s “a contrast between common sense conservatives and crazy communism,” and another saying, “There are a bunch of crazy people; elect the common sense people to Washington.”
“Did you get that? They’re trying to steamroll you with the message common sense versus crazy. That is Republicans’ chosen narrative for this election,” said Psaki.
It gets a lot harder to take that seriously, though, she said, when Republicans are running candidates like Brandon Herrera in Texas’ 23rd Congressional District — the candidate replacing the disgraced Rep. Tony Gonzales, who resigned over sexual misconduct earlier this year. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) identified Herrera as one of the “common sense” candidates they’d promote during a campaign stop in San Antonio.
“Now, here’s where this actually gets a little crazy, because the so-called common-sense GOP candidate in that race is … a 30-year-old pro-gun YouTuber who literally goes by the handle @TheAKGuy,” said Psaki. “And it’s hard to pinpoint just exactly what the worst thing about this guy is. Maybe it’s him goose-stepping to a Nazi marching anthem while carrying a German rifle. A real video there. Or his decision to recreate the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in one of his many videos promoting gun rights.”
Other highlights, Psaki continued, include “the time he mocked American service members who died by suicide, or even the fact that he refers to himself as a gun-rights absolutist while running to represent a district that includes Uvalde, Texas, the site, of course, of one of the most deadly school shootings in American history. Or how about the comments he made about mothers and children, comments which are so obscene … I am not going to repeat them, and I’m not going to play them for you on television.”
As if all that weren’t enough, Psaki said there’s also video footage of him calling for the end of Social Security.
In the clip, Herrera referred to Social Security as a “Ponzi scheme” and said we should “abolish old people.”
“Does that sound like common sense or completely crazy?” said Psaki.
