California healthcare company abruptly slashes 700 jobs

A Los Angeles-based healthcare provider announced it was laying off more than 700 people.

24 Hour Home Care announced that it was permanently axing 738 workers from the company, which offers daily living and personal care support for veterans and people with disabilities.

The firm, which employs roughly 30,000 caregivers across California, said the cuts would take effect on Sept. 15.

The company said the layoffs stem from insurance provider Health Net’s plan to eliminate Personal Care and Homemaker Services (PCHS) on Jan. 1, 2027.

“We are disappointed by Health Net’s decision and recognize the uncertainty it creates for affected members, caregivers and their families,” 24 Hour Home Care told Home Health Care News.

The move comes as several other healthcare companies in the Golden State have announced job cuts.

Stanford Health Care filed notices in late August to lay off 95 people, primarily affecting non-clinical information technology and digital health roles.

John Muir Health announced plans on September 1 to cut 75 positions across multiple locations including Walnut Creek, Concord and Pleasanton.

Earlier this year in March, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health shuttered clinical services across seven locations following a $50 million funding deficit.

That same month, UC Irvine Health cut 150 positions as part of a systemwide “strategic restructuring.”
