Investigators Search for Answers After 5 Were Killed in Runway Crash

Investigators in Miami searched for clues on Monday one day after five people were killed and five were injured when a cargo plane overran a runway upon landing and struck multiple vehicles.

The plane appeared to have overshot the end of the runway at Miami International Airport. It remained unclear Monday morning if the dead and injured had been on the plane or on the ground. The Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue chief, Raied Jadallah, said on Sunday that three of those injured were in critical condition and had been taken to a trauma center.

“What we found was a very complex situation here,” he said. Photos and videos taken on Sunday showed blackish smoke billowing from the partly damaged plane.

The National Transportation Safety Board was expected to provide a briefing on Monday. The authorities had not released the identities of the people who were killed as of Monday morning.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said more than 60 units had responded to the incident.

“Units arrived to find an airplane that had caught on fire as a result of this crash, with heavy flames and smoke showing,” the department said in a statement.

The Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and landed at the Miami airport around 2 p.m., the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.

Kelly Nantel, a spokeswoman for Amazon, said in a statement that an “Amazon Air plane operated by 21 Air experienced an incident while attempting to land” at the airport.

The crash happened during a busy Labor Day holiday weekend. The airport had more than 300 flights, outbound and inbound, that were delayed or canceled as of Sunday afternoon, according to FlightAware.com, which tracks flights. Disruptions continued into Monday morning, with at least 160 flights delayed and 65 canceled by around 11 a.m.

David Ovalle and Richard Fausset contributed reporting.
