Mountain lion lurks in a tree on busy residential street in San Francisco — as animal control scrambles

A mountain lionwas spotted on the streets of San Francisco –– triggering a quick response from Animal Care and Control Saturday night.

The apex predator was hiding in a tree near Fell and Baker Streets when the city’s animal control officers arrived at the scene Saturday in Panhandle near Golden Gate Park.

A person walking a dog had first noticed the lion climbing up a tree with dense foliage, making it easier for the animal to hide among the leaves. San Francisco Animal Care and Control issued its first alert around 9:10 pm on Sept. 5.

“If you see the mountain lion, slowly back away, do not run. Call Animal Care & Control at 415-554-9400 or 911 in a life safety emergency,” the agency said in its alert.

Authorities cordoned off the Panhandle’s northeast edge, closing Fell Street between Broderick and Central. Late Saturday, officials launched a drone and illuminated the canopy to locate the mountain lion but didn’t see it.

Department of Fish and Wildlife spokesperson Krysten Kellum confirmed wardens never spotted the animal, suggesting it may have already fled before team members arrived, reported the San Francisco Chronicle.

Officials released safety guidance for residents who might encounter the big cat, warning everyone to back away slowly, keep dogs on a leash, pick up children and never run under any circumstances.

If the animal approaches, authorities advise making yourself look as large as possible by waving your arms, shouting and throwing objects toward it.
