The Surprising Thing That Motivates Men to Lose Weight More Than Health

Men swear they don’t care about dieting or body image, but then they see one bad photo and that conviction is out the freaking window. There you are, zooming in on your own face and trying to figure out when your neck started to look so…thick.

A new study published in PLOS One by researchers at Anglia Ruskin University put 24 men into focus groups about weight loss, and it didn’t take long for the contradiction to become obvious. The men laughed off appearance concerns as something women worried about, then talked about avoiding photos, disliking what they saw in the mirror, and the personal betrayal of a suit that used to button and now absolutely does not.

The researchers pointed out that the men were “themselves engaging with the very preoccupation they had distanced themselves from the female domain.” They insisted appearance didn’t concern them while giving detailed accounts of how much it did.

Why Men Avoid Talking About Dieting Even When They’re Trying to Lose Weight

Even the word “diet” seemed to piss them off. Participants associated it with restriction, femininity, and fussing over food. A 2025 scoping review in PMC found links between male body-image concerns and depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem, while men are still much less likely to seek help or join programs addressing them.

That means researchers have to rethink how these programs are presented to men in the first place. The study authors suggest moving away from diet-heavy language and leaning into challenges, competition, and achievable goals instead, which could make it easier to get men on board without anyone saying the D-word or bringing up the pants they can’t button anymore.

What actually motivated the men was even more revealing. One participant who had undergone emergency heart surgery said a picture of himself was “the more, bigger prompt” to lose weight, ranking an unflattering photo above nearly dying. In every focus group, men were concerned first about the dissatisfaction with their appearance, and their health second.

Several men said their wives were doing a fair amount of the heavy lifting at home, planning meals, buying groceries, and deciding what snacks made it through the front door. One participant called that “half the battle.” Another said he wouldn’t have done it without her. Researchers think weight-loss programs could make better use of that setup.

The men also talked about how easy it was to fall back into old habits. One participant used doughnuts as the example: one becomes two, “and before you know where you are, you’re back at the other end of where you want to be.” So they’d try again, make some progress, screw up a little, and keep going. Never calling it a diet, of course.
