Severe thunderstorms tore through Toronto on Wednesday, causing major flooding, downed trees, widespread power outages and significant damage to Rogers Stadium, a venue that hosts major concert tours.
The 50,000-capacity stadium, which opened in 2025 and is owned by Live Nation, was built specifically for big-name acts like Oasis, which played there last year on its reunion tour, and the Korean pop band BTS, which was in town late last month.
Drone and helicopter footage taken after the storm showed collapsed seats and partly collapsed grandstands at the stadium, in the Downsview neighborhood. There were no reported injuries.
The country singer Chris Stapleton had just completed two nights of shows the day before the storms, and Bruno Mars and Foo Fighters have performed there this year. The next scheduled concert, and its final show of the summer, is AC/DC on Sept. 16, according to the venue’s website. It was not immediately clear if that concert would be able to proceed as planned.
A press officer for Live Nation Canada confirmed in a statement on Thursday that Rogers Stadium had sustained significant damage. “We are currently assessing the extent of the damage and will provide further information as it becomes available,” the statement said.
Thunderstorms developed across southern Ontario on Wednesday, whipping up winds that knocked over trees and power lines. More than 150,000 customers in the province lost power, according to Environment Canada, the government weather service.
In the late afternoon, a fierce storm moved across the greater Toronto area, dumping two to five inches of rain that brought widespread flooding in city streets. Winds above 50 miles an hour were recorded, though radar estimated that wind gusts most likely reached 80 m.p.h. in some locations.
Hail as large as tennis balls fell over North York, a neighborhood in north Toronto, smashing car windshields and apartment windows.
