Dyson’s $500 toothbrush puts a high-tech camera in your mouth

Ever wanted to watch a live stream from the inside of your mouth while you brush? Maybe not. But for those who do desire a more intimate look at their hygiene routine, Dyson has come up with a solution: a high-tech, WiFi-connected, AI-aided toothbrush to the tune of $500.

Dyson said its CameraJet electric toothbrush, which it launched Tuesday after six years in development, brushes and flosses at the same time — a process users can watch live through an app, thanks to its integrated 100,000-pixel macro lens camera.

The camera uses Dyson’s machine-learning algorithm to identify gaps between teeth, the company said in a news release, which helps trigger a “jet burst” of mouth rinse stored in the brush’s tank.

For those worried their view will be obstructed by a cloud of toothpaste foam, fear not — Dyson has a solution. The company recommends using a proprietary, non-foaming toothpaste (flavors: ginger mint or spearmint).

“Flossing is an awkward and time-consuming chore,” founder James Dyson said in the news release. He said the tool introduces “an entirely new way to keep your mouth healthy.”

Andrew Eder, an emeritus professor of restorative dentistry at University College London, said he wants to see more studies on the device’s benefits.

“If this is being looked into and developed properly, then I see no reason why there aren’t benefits. But it has a significant price tag,” he said. “It’s quite a large tool to hold. It may take a little bit of getting used to.”
