2 abandoned dogs rescued from squalid NYC basement: ‘We don’t know how they survived this long’

A pair of vermin-infested pups were rescued from a squalid Bronx apartment building basement where they were heartlessly abandoned and left to stew in their own filth, according to the group that saved them.

The two dogs, dubbed Ren and Stimpy after the ’90s cartoon, were saved on Friday by NYC Second Chance Rescue after the building’s new superintendent discovered them surrounded by their own urine and feces, the organization said.

“We don’t know how they survived this long,” the group said in a heartbreaking social media post.

The duo isn’t out of the woods yet and still has a long road to recovery.

Images show the sad-looking pooches with mangy hair, and the group reports that the two have countless open sores, infections and are plagued with maggots and fleas.

“One of them is suffering beyond words. He is so severely matted that maggots have burrowed beneath his hair and are eating away at his skin. He is being eaten alive,” the rescue organization posted.

The building’s superintendent told NYC Second Chance Rescue that he was “devastated” when he found the two dogs.

The super told rescuers that they were left behind by the building’s old super, who abandoned them after he became terminally ill with cancer.

Rescuers rushed the two to an emergency hospital, where veterinarians worked hard to save the pups’ lives.

The group said the two dogs continue to be at risk as of Saturday evening, and that Stimpy was in an incredibly vulnerable condition.

The poor pooch had to be sedated before vets could shave off all his matted hair, which had wrapped tightly around his leg and began to cut into it.

“How do you love an animal and then leave them to suffer like this? We will never understand,” the group said.
