The difference between well-designed houses that feel like a home and those that feel like a museum is the presence of personal, meaningful decor touches. If you want your space to possess that cozy, comforting sense of home, why hide your keepsakes in a closed-off box in the back of your closet? Displaying these special memories as accents throughout your decor will add some unique style to your space and serve as joyful, everyday reminders. Take a page from some of the pros — “Fixer Upper” stars Joanna and Chip Gaines’ beautiful home incorporates plenty of sentimental elements, giving it a design that reflects what they truly love and value. For more inspiration, Gaines recently shared a video on her Instagram showing how she displays her meaningful memorabilia. Using the Your Story Brass Display Cabinet from her Magnolia collection, she brings together pieces like dried flowers, loving notes, and vintage accents into a stylish yet personalized design.

Everyone has their own individual collection of keepsakes, so you can’t fully replicate Gaines’ design. While you can enjoy the same display cabinet and creative approaches she uses, you can also get crafty and create your own DIY version for less. The true charm of this display comes from the unique memories it holds, so adding more personalization to your design can make it all the more special.

Style Your Display Like Joanna

While not everyone can have her natural eye for design, there are still plenty of ways to decorate your home like Joanna Gaines. Gaines described the look of her keepsake display as “a tiny museum of springtime inspiration that’s hanging near my kitchen” (via Instagram). She placed memorabilia in the display cabinet, using delicate pins to secure everything onto the linen backboard. For a similar look, you can find inspiration in your own garden or favorite outdoor spots for a meaningful touch. There are many ways to press and dry flowers — line parchment paper between pages of a closed book, two tiles, or even a tortilla press, and sandwich your florals inside. Gaines opted to attach some florals against neutral, textured cards, while leaving one bloom pinned simply to the backing.

She also incorporates personal trinkets like a rustic bell, a small brass frame showcasing some scenery, and a small cut-out drawing of a wasp. Like Joanna, you can also incorporate some meaningful messages in your display. She layered a typewritten poem on a small, white card over a large card with pressed greenery for some understated contrast, as well as pinned notes from her son. One note she shrunk into a mini letter, a clever trick you can DIY by tracing your keepsake letter onto a sheet of shrink plastic with a permanent marker and baking it on a lined sheet at 325 degrees Fahrenheit for a few minutes until shrunken and flat.

Craft A DIY Display Cabinet For Less

While Gaines’ Magnolia collection display cabinet perfectly captures her signature charm, the price may not accommodate every budget. If you’re aiming for the same look as the Magnolia version, start by finding an affordable glass photo box — for instance, the HighFree Gold Glass Photo Box from Amazon comes in various sizes starting at $17.99 in a similar style. For the backing, take some plain corkboard and cut it to fit the size of the frame opening. Wrap the corkboard with some thin linen fabric — here, you can opt for a neutral fabric like Gaines or choose a color that will work best among your decor. Glue the wrapped board to the back wall of the inner frame using glass glue, and voila — you’ve got Gaines’ display cabinet look for less.

On the other hand, you may be an expert DIYer and want to create a shadow box for all of your treasured keepsakes from scratch. As long as you’re comfortable with some at-home woodworking and using some intricate tools, this approach is a great way to make the project feel even more personalized. You’ll have more control over the colors, size, and overall style of your display box — plus, you’ll craft a new memory in the process.
