Sex and the City‘s Charlotte may be content with her fairytale ending marriage to Evan Handler‘s Harry, but actress Kristin Davis had some hopes regarding one of her character’s exes that were swiftly dashed in the HBO sequel And Just Like That…
In a recent episode on her Are You A Charlotte? podcast, the star revealed a scrapped storyline for the offshoot series that would mark the reappearance of ex-husband Trey (Kyle MacLachlan); she shared the news perhaps to the chagrin of showrunner Michael Patrick King, who she said doesn’t love when his actors discuss abandoned plot points.
“I loved working with Kyle MacLachlan so incredibly much,” she began, saying the Twin Peaks star was only supposed to be on the show for five episodes but ended up staying. “We all really just fell madly in love with him and he had to stay.”

She continued, “There was an idea that Trey/Kyle would come on in And Just Like That… and then it didn’t happen, and so Kyle and I had to talk about it ’cause I was kind of mad at him, I said ‘Why didn’t you come on? We wanted you to come on.’ And he said, ‘I just wanted it to be amazing,’ meaning that it had a kind of almost sad note — I’m not saying too much, I hope Michael’s not mad at me — but it had this incredible lead-up to me seeing Trey again and the thing that I loved most about this particular episode that did not happen is that Charlotte tells the friends that she has not communicated at all with Trey, which is kind of shocking in a way.”
Davis added that the storyline reflected Charlotte’s “unfinished feeling” with the character whom she divorced, which she shares as an individual with her previous co-star. “She really wants to see him, and I, Kristin, also feel that way. So I’m hoping that we can kind of revisit a ‘maybe they run into each other just at an event or a restaurant or something like that.’”
However, Davis said she was sympathetic to MacLachlan’s hesitance to reprise the character, concluding, “I did give him a hard time the other day, and then he explained his point of view and I did understand it. When you have played such a wonderful part in the past that people have such a great memory of, and it was so special as a work experience, you want it to kind of stay in this glorious place, and I think he just didn’t want there to be kind of a sad note to the end. So I get that.”
