3 Sophomore Albums From the 90s That Failed to Match the Commercial Success of the Artist’s Debut

One of the hardest parts of releasing a successful debut album is the follow-up release. A sophomore release can be a make-or-break moment for an artist or band. It’s often difficult to replicate the debut’s success, and many fail to live up to expectations. These three sophomore albums from the 90s failed to match the commercial success of the artist’s debut.

‘fairweather johnson’ by hootie & the blowfish

Though their sophomore album wasn’t a commercial failure, it didn’t match the success of their 1994 debut. Cracked Rear View is among the best-selling albums in the United States, with over 20 million units sold. Any artist would struggle to replicate that kind of success. Their sophomore album, Fairweather Johnson, debuted at No. 1, but sold only 3 million copies in comparison.

‘tha doggfather’ by snoop dogg

In 1994, Snoop Dogg‘s debut album “Doggystyle” set a record for the highest first-week record sales for a debut album at the time. It sold over 800,000 copies in its first week and over 11 million copies worldwide. Ahead of the debut release, Snoop Dogg was featured on Dr. Dre’s 1992 album The Chronic, which directed attention towards the new rapper. Subsequently, Dr. Dre produced the massively successful debut record.

In 1996, Snoop released a follow-up that wasn’t a commercial failure, but fell short of the debut’s historic sales. Tha Doggfather sold a little less than 500,000 copies in its first week, and 2 million in the US overall.

‘soup’ by blind melon

Blind Melon’s self-titled debut album was a “slow burner” in 1992, selling only a few thousand copies in its first week. Ten months later, in 1993, their iconic music video for “No Rain” became a hit on MTV. Following this, their debut shot to No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and has sold over 4 million copies in the US. Their 1995 follow-up, Soup, featured a much darker tone and approach compared to their debut. Given this, fans failed to connect as they did with their previous record. Soup peaked at No. 28 on the Billboard 200 and sold a little over 200,000 copies in the US by the end of 1996.
