Why Americans Keep Giving Their Pets the Same Names as Their Babies

The most popular dog names in America right now are Bella, Luna, Max, Daisy, and Charlie. The most popular baby names include Charlotte, Luna, Oliver, and Elijah. The Venn diagram has practically become a circle.

The overlap is much bigger than Luna. According to Rover’s database of millions of registered pets, Leo is the fourth most popular classic cat name in the country. Per the Social Security Administration, it’s the 24th most popular name for baby boys born between 2020 and 2025. Chloe is 21st for girls and 17th for female cats. Bella is 87th for human babies and the seventh most popular cute cat name on Rover. Charlie appears in the top 10 for dogs and the top 200 for both baby boys and girls.

At a certain point, you have to wonder if the “new baby announcement” is for a child or a rescue.

Pet Humanization Is Nothing New, But We’ve Reached a New Level With Baby Names

The naming convergence starts to make sense once you look at the money. Americans spent $158 billion on their pets in 2025, projected to hit $165 billion in 2026, according to the American Pet Products Association. Average annual spending per dog has grown to over $2,400, up from roughly $1,200 in 2015. More than four in five millennials in the US consider their pets their children. One in ten American pet owners has reportedly delayed having kids, or having more kids, because of pet expenses. They’re basically a dependent.

Pet humanization has been two decades in the making. Organic food, insurance, birthday parties, and $490 million in Halloween costumes came first. The names are just the most visible symptom. And the cycle sustains itself: a name crosses over to pets, gets used so much that it feels warm and familiar, and shows back up on baby name lists with renewed appeal. Oliver and Luna work on a toddler and a tabby for the same reasons. Parents have largely made their peace with that.

Luna spiked for babies and cats alike after Harry Potter’s Luna Lovegood went mainstream. Bella peaked post-Twilight and never came back down. The pop culture pipeline that feeds baby name trends is the same one feeding pet name trends now, which means a blockbuster franchise doesn’t just influence what parents name their kids anymore. It influences what they name everyone.
