5 Signs Someone Is Emotionally Manipulating You

The hardest part about emotional manipulation is that it doesn’t look like manipulation most of the time. It looks like someone having a rough day, or being a little cold, or needing space, or just being brutally honest. By the time it starts to feel like a pattern, most people have already spent months explaining it away.

Over a third of adults have experienced emotional manipulation in a close relationship, according to a survey by the American Psychological Association—and many didn’t realize it while it was happening. A foundational study cataloged nearly 1,000 real-world examples of how people intentionally influence each other’s emotions and drew a hard line between two categories: negative feedback, which is uncomfortable but ultimately serves the person receiving it, and rejection strategies, which exist purely to benefit the person deploying them.

The five rejection strategies they identified are the ones you should pay close attention to.

1. Selfishness

Sulking, constant irritability, and being condescending all fall into this category, deployed not to resolve anything but to make someone else responsible for your emotional state. The other person complies to end the discomfort. The manipulator gets what they wanted. That’s the whole thing.

2. Disrespect

There’s a difference between someone who’s rude when they’re stressed out and someone who’s rude just to get what they want. The insults, the obnoxious demands, the deliberate unfriendliness—when those are targeted and consistent, then you might want to rethink their intentions. “That’s just how they are” is usually how they’re written off.

3. Criticizing

Feedback is about what someone did. This is about what someone is—their character, their judgment, their worth as a human. NeuroLaunch found that chronic exposure erodes self-trust, leaving people second-guessing their own perceptions and memories even after the relationship ends, and months after. Prolonged psychological stress also raises cortisol, disrupts sleep, and weakens the immune system, so the damage isn’t only emotional.

4. Withdrawal

Refusing to talk, respond, or acknowledge someone until they feel so bad that they have to comply is a punishment strategy. Most people call it needing space. The tell is whether the silence stops the moment the other person caves. If it did, they didn’t want space; they just wanted their ideal outcome.

5. Diminishing Comparison

Inflating personal accomplishments to make someone else feel worse by comparison is deliberate. The bragging manufactures a hierarchy that keeps the other person feeling perpetually inadequate and easier to control. People who already struggle with self-worth are the most susceptible, and that’s usually not accidental.

Every one of these strategies exists to benefit the manipulator at the other person’s expense, with no resolution on offer. Negative feedback, even when it stings, gives someone something to work with. Manipulation just leaves them worse off and wondering what they did wrong. That’s cruel.
