SoCal city’s homeless sweep results in 69 arrests in effort to ‘keep our communities safe’

Cops cracked down on local crime and disorder in Orange County last week, busting 69 offenders in a massive homeless sweep.

The Orange Police Department Bike Team worked alongside the Santa Ana Police Department and other agencies to “address quality of life issues” near Hart Park and along the borders of the two cities.

The Orange Police Department Bike Teamis a specialized group that is “centered around Neighborhood Enhancement” and focuses on addressing quality-of-life concerns.

“The operation focused on addressing ongoing transient-related issues and resulted in 69 arrests, including 53 misdemeanors and 16 felonies, along 10 outreach and resource referrals,” Orange Police posted on Facebook.

“This collaboration is a great example of agencies working together to address quality of life concerns, keep our communities safe, and connect those in need with available resources,” the department added.

Following the successful mission, the Bike Team went back to Santiago Creek bed where Hart Park is located and cleaned up the homeless encampments.

Facebook users largely cheered the operation, but some urged officials to get those arrested real mental health support and resources.

Last week’s crackdown comes as a shooting at Hart Park killed one person in early August.

The shooter was on “parole for possession of a loaded firearm and a controlled substance” and was convicted for “robbery and firearm-related charges” in the past according to Orange PD.

While it was an isolated incident, detectives believe the suspect and the victim previously knew each other.
