Despite an endorsement from President Donald Trump, a scandal-plagued House Republican will likely see his seat filled by someone else in November.
According to a report from The Daily Beast, Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) will suffer a “humiliating defeat” in the Republican primary on Tuesday.
Mills, 46, is running for a third term in Florida’s 7th Congressional District against three other Republican contenders, including popular conservative news anchor Ryan Elijah.
A new poll from Capital Strategic Partners shows 44 percent of likely voters support Elijah, compared to only 27 percent for Mills.
According to the Beast report, the numbers “….got even worse when the pollsters asked: ‘Cory Mills has been the subject of a congressional ethics investigation, a police report alleging assault, and questions about his business record. Knowing this, if the primary were held today, would you vote for Cory Mills or Ryan Elijah?’”
Responding again, 48 percent then went for Elijah, with Mills’ share collapsing to 20 percent.
The polling represents a “significant setback “to Trump, who endorsed Mills in February. Trump, who appointed Mills to the Defense Business Board during his first term, had commended Mills for “fighting tirelessly” in Congress to promote policies including Second Amendment protections and anti-immigrant policies.
Mills suffered a massive blow last Friday, after outgoing Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) refused to endorse the incumbent Republican, telling reporters, “I have not endorsed Cory Mills and I do not support Cory Mills.”
