8 Great Deals From Patagonia’s Past-Season Sale

Patagonia’s annual past-season sale is underway, with deals up to 40 percent off regular price.

Patagonia is a perennial favorite here at WIRED. Founded by dirtbag climber extraordinaire Yvon Chouinard, the company has been reliably churning out durable outdoor clothing and gear that’s topped many of our outdoor guides for years.

Below, we’ve gathered all the best deals on our favorites. You’ll find everything from base layers to duffel bags. Some of the discounts vary based on size and color.

Be sure to check out our other outdoor and clothing guides, including the Best Merino Wool, Best Base Layers, and Best Backpacking Tents.

Deals on Rain Jackets, Fleece, and Base Layers

Torrentshell 3L Rain Jacket for $132 ($57 off)Patagonia (Men’s)Patagonia (Women’s)

The Torrentshell is Patagonia’s basic, no-nonsense, three-layer rain shell made from a recycled fabric with a PFC-free DWR finish. This jacket is 95 percent as good and less than half the price of the Arc’teryx Beta SL everyone seems to love. It’s got a two-way adjustable hood, and cuffs have Velcro to give a nice, tight seal against the rain. The only catch here is that the sale colors and sizes are extremely limited.

Nano Puff Jacket for $160 ($69 off)Patagonia (Men’s)Patagonia (Women’s)

This is a good deal on one of the most packable synthetic puffer jackets we’ve tested. If you’re avoiding down but want a light puffer for three-season backpacking or just around-town wear, this is the jacket to get.

R1 Fleece Pullover for $93 ($62 off)Patagonia (Men’s)Patagonia (Women’s)

Patagonia’s R1 Fleece jackets are among the most iconic pieces of hiking gear out there. I see at least two people in these every time I spend a day on the trail. The grid fleece means it breathes well, helping to keep you dry when you’re active on cool days. It’s one of the most versatile mid-layers you can own. I like this, the pullover version, because it saves on weight, but the full-zip jacket is also on sale.

Capilene Midweight Crewneck Base Layer for $53 ($36 off)Patagonia (Men’s)Patagonia (Women’s)

Our favorite synthetic base layer, Patagonia’s Capilene long underwear is super soft and stretchy. Capilene is spun from 100 percent recycled polyester (not the same as polypropylene, which is something totally different). These are smooth on the outside and have a subtly embossed diamond grid pattern on the inside, which Patagonia says creates little pockets that trap heat and help wick moisture.

Houdini Jacket for $83 ($36 off)Patagonia (Men’s)Patagonia (Women’s)

The Houdini is an extremely useful jacket that I don’t love but definitely use frequently. Its usefulness lies in the fact that it packs down to about the size of a tennis ball, it’s light, and it’ll stop the wind and shed a light rain, all of which have earned it a permanent spot in my day-hiking kit. What I don’t like is that it rustles, it’s not very breathable, and I feel like I’m wearing a plastic bag when I use it.

Men’s Insulated Fjord Flannel Shirt $99 ($99 off)Patagonia (Men’s)

Regular readers will know I’m a fan of Fjällräven’s wool Canada shirt; think of this as Patagonia’s version of that. This is 100 percent cotton, not wool, which makes the outside softer (it’s brushed flannel), with a recycled polyester insulation layer to up the warmth. The color and patterns are decidedly lumberjack, so be prepared to split some wood when you’re wearing this one.

Deals on Patagonia Packs and Gear

Black Hole Duffel 55L for $125 ($54 off)Patagonia

This is one of our favorite options in our guide to the best duffel bags. It’s made from 100 percent recycled polyester with a TPU film and laminate. Our testers have been using the 40-liter version for 15 years, and the laminate hasn’t peeled. The gear-swallowing 100-liter model is also on sale for $157 ($68 off).

Black Hole Waist Pack 5L for $59 ($26 off)Patagonia

I’ll confess I have only one real use for a minimalist fanny pack like this: I wear one when backpacking so I can get to frequently used items like snacks without taking off my pack. The Black Hole fanny pack is just big enough to hold everything and small enough not to get in the way of my pack’s hip belt. It uses 100 percent recycled, ultralight ripstop nylon that’s been treated with a durable water-repellent (DWR) finish, and it packs down into a small stash pocket when you don’t need it.
