Reigning NFL MVP Matthew Stafford and his wife, Kelly, are facing over half a million dollars in tax debt just before football season kicks off.
The Super Bowl-winning Los Angeles Rams quarterback and his wife have been hit with a state tax lien totaling $534,453.67 by the California Franchise Tax Board for the 2024 taxable year.
The July 14 lien exclusively obtained by Page Six attaches to property and property rights they currently own or acquire in the future, according to the filing. Interest and fees can accrue if the debt remains unpaid.
Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk confirmed to Page Six that the lien is still active and has not been released.
Reps for the Staffords did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.
The former Detroit Lions quarterback agreed to a $55 million, one-year contract extension from the Super Bowl contender Los Angeles Rams in 2026, which will put his career NFL earnings over $500 million.
Meanwhile, Matthew and Kelly have quietly been building a real estate empire, purchasing a $28.15 million Hidden Hills mansion in 2023 after buying the property next door for $10.5 million the year before, Realtor reported.
However, they have also been trimming their portfolio, unloading three other Hidden Hills homes for a combined $21.3 million in June.
The couple and their four daughters have called Southern California home since he was traded from the Detroit Lions to the Los Angeles Rams in 2021.
The couple has been togethersince their days at the University of Georgia, where Matthew was the field general for the Bulldogs from 2006 to 2008.
The college sweethearts made it official by tying the knot in 2015.
The couple has made the most of the offseason, attending Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s star studded July 3rd wedding.
The invite came despite Kelly admitting the attention the superstar couple received made her feel “jealous.”
“I was a little jealous of the fact that they were getting all this attention and all of a sudden the football game was the sideshow,” Kelly said on “The Morning After” podcast in 2024.
The Rams are set to open the 2026 football season on September 10 in Melbourne, Australia against the San Francisco 49ers.
