‘Astonishing’ Trump order to ignite new political firestorm for GOP: report

President Donald Trump’s call for a sweeping overhaul of the childhood immunization schedule is set to make vaccine policy a flashpoint just three months before the midterm elections.

Trump signed an executive order Monday calling for a slimmed-down childhood vaccine schedule and breaking the combined measles-mumps-rubella shot into three separately administered doses, and Axios reported the bureaucratic timeline and resulting legal challenges all but guarantee to keep the issue fresh in voters’ minds.

The order also directs states to review federal vaccine recommendations and consider updating school enrollment requirements. It gives HHS 90 days to present plans for offering combination vaccines as single shots, assess the “ideal timing and sequencing” of core childhood vaccines, and develop alternatives to aluminum-based ingredients — all but ensuring another round of vaccine headlines even closer to Election Day.

At the signing, Trump suggested the MMR vaccine could be “quite lethal,” though he acknowledged under questioning he had no evidence, saying only “some people… say it is that way.”

Georgetown law professor Lawrence Gostin denounced the order as “dangerous & unlawful,” predicting it “will almost certainly be blocked by the courts.” Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA), a physician who chairs the Senate health committee, broke publicly with Trump, posting on X that “the President does not have the expertise to make these changes.”

Democrats and health advocates went further, warning the policy could drive down vaccination rates amid ongoing measles outbreaks. Robert Wood Johnson Foundation CEO Richard Besser called it “astonishing” that the administration would respond to disease outbreaks “by playing politics with children’s lives.”

The CDC itself has said there is “no published scientific evidence” that splitting the MMR shot offers any benefit, and numerous studies have found no link between vaccines and autism — despite Trump’s continued personal conviction otherwise.

Childhood vaccines remain broadly popular in polling, and the order also undercuts a months-long effort by HHS to project a more mainstream, stable image.

With courts likely to intervene and the 90-day clock now running, the fight over Trump’s order is positioned to resurface right as midterm campaigns hit their final stretch.
