Max Miller remains the GOP nominee in Ohio House race

Republicans in Ohio’s 7th Congressional District are locked in with Rep. Max Miller, whose ex-wife has accused him of domestic violence.

Denying any wrongdoing, Miller (R-Ohio) resisted calls to drop his bid for a third term ahead of a Monday afternoon deadline that would have allowed local party officials to select a replacement candidate. His campaign did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Miller faces Democrat Brian Poindexter, a union ironworker and city council member, in November to represent the conservative-leaning district stretching south from the Cleveland suburbs. Miller’s name could still be removed from the ballot for two more weeks, but then there would be no Republican nominee in the district.

After their divorce last year, Miller’s ex-wife alleged in court filings that he threw hot water on her from a pan of eggs he had just cooked, once held a gun to her head and hurt their daughter, who suffered a fractured collarbone in February. Miller has dismissed the claims, which are now being investigated by the House Ethics Committee, as fabrications during a messy custody battle.

Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio), Miller’s former father-in-law, recently called Miller “a danger” who is not fit to serve in Congress, kicking off a last-minute push to replace him. But Republican voters and leaders, including President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana), largely stood by Miller, who vowed to carry on in the race because he did not want his daughter to see him as “a quitter.”
