The Republican Party leadership has given up hoping for any help — financial or otherwise — from President Donald Trump with the midterms looming just over the horizon, according to a new report.
Assessments from polling data, economic indicators, and Trump’s inner circle paint a consistent picture of his second term — none of it good for Republicans, according to a report from Axios founders Mike Allen and Jim VandeHei.
Trump insiders expressed concern to Axios that the president is “trapped by decisions” that have produced negative political consequences: an unpopular war in Iran, controversial tariffs, and an obsessive focus on monuments and renovations.
Trump’s approval rating has collapsed to 32 percent in recent Quinnipiac polling. More damaging: 68 percent of voters say he isn’t focused enough on problems most Americans face.
A Trump insider described the dynamic to Allen and VandeHei, bluntly stating, “He concentrates on the hobbies that distract from his terrible polling numbers, about which he is in denial. The other issue is how the war, tariffs and monuments are demoralizing the base.”
Republican complaints center on Trump’s reluctance to deploy MAGA Inc.’s $400 million super PAC cache in competitive races. The unwillingness to spend aggressively now has “demoralized donors,” Axios is reporting.
According to the report, the president’s obsession with legacy-building renovations and construction projects trumps all other priorities.
“Our reporting shows Trump has no desire to back off any of these topics, especially renovations and monuments, or shift to a new policy agenda before or after the November elections,” the wrote before adding, “But an 80-year-old man who made the greatest comeback in American political history appears too proud, stubborn and undisciplined to change, Republicans privately admit.”
