Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN), who received President Donald Trump’s endorsement, faces a surprising primary challenge.
Ogles will now face former Tennessee Agriculture Commissioner Charlie Hatcher in a newly redrawn district.
According to Politico, GOP insiders worry another Trump-backed candidate embarrassment looms after Navy veteran Amir Hassan lost his Michigan bid Tuesday, losing to a candidate who had suspended his campaign.
A super PAC called Invest in Tomorrow Coalition, backed by renewable energy executives, spent $2 million attacking Ogles on television, Politico reported.
Hatcher has outraised Ogles but spent no campaign funds on TV, instead focusing on mailers and digital advertising, the outlet added.
Invest in Tomorrow Coalition’s survey showed Hatcher leading 37-33 percent with 30 percent undecided, within the margin of error.
One GOP operative told Politico, “the vibes aren’t looking great for him.”
Ogles’ allies launched a “rescue mission” as he continues lagging in fundraising.
