Bannon’s profane relationship advice to reporter detailed: ‘World is full of surprises’

Steve Bannon’s profane relationship advice to a prominent congressional reporter was revealed Thursday in a first-person essay.

Annie Karni recounted in Vogue the summer after her 2025 separation, when she couldn’t stop herself from telling politicians she covered that her marriage had ended. Among the unlikeliest confidants, she wrote, was Bannon, the former Trump White House chief strategist and “War Room” podcast host.

Karni phoned Bannon at a low moment to ask about then-Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s comments on Gaza, she said, but found herself fighting back tears. When asked why, she told him she was getting divorced. Bannon wanted the details, then told her to pull herself together.

“You’re Annie f—ing Karni,” he said, per the essay. “Come on, girl.”

Karni wrote that the profane pep talk landed as well as any she’d received, and that she told Bannon so. When they crossed paths again that summer, she wrote, he said she looked happier and cautioned that it was no time to give her heart to anyone new.

“Steve Bannon, relationship counselor. The world is full of surprises,” wrote Karni.

Karni, who has covered Bannon critically, acknowledged the oddity of drawing comfort from him, saying that in that moment she thought he was simply being kind.

Bannon wasn’t the only big name to weigh in.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, said mid-interview, peered over his bifocals: “Men are so stupid,” he shared, shaking his head. “Just so stupid.”

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO), meanwhile, said she could relate. The Colorado Republican, who has pushed to punish colleagues over sexual misconduct, offered a blunt aside when Karni raised the effort to rid Congress of sexual harassers: “My best friend was a little skank, and she ruined my marriage,” Boebert said, per the essay.
