Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) has reversed his position on the Senate filibuster for a second time.
Earlier this year, the outgoing senator broke with his longstanding support for the controversial rule, announcing he would back changing the filibuster to pass Trump’s SAVE America Act, a voting restrictions bill.
Cornyn’s shift was designed to appeal to angry MAGA supporters gravitating toward his rival, state Attorney General Ken Paxton, and to secure President Donald Trump’s endorsement, neither of which materialized.
Now, as he exits Congress after losing his re-nomination bid, Cornyn told The National Review he opposes eliminating the filibuster again.
“I said I was open to changes in the filibuster, but I was intentionally not very specific,” Cornyn said.
“I’m happy to have that conversation, but I’m not prepared to vote to overturn the filibuster at this time.”
Meanwhile, Trump continues demanding Republicans scrap the rule to advance his agenda, though many Republicans resist, recognizing the filibuster historically obstructs Democratic proposals more than Republican ones.
