How have blue states’ legal battles with the Trump administration worked out a year and a half in? New numbers from the biggest Democratic-led state in the country provide a snapshot.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta (D) told reporters Tuesday that courts have blocked Trump officials’ actions — at least temporarily — in 83 percent of his office’s cases against the administration (excluding cases in which judges have yet to act).
Many cases are still working their way through the courts, making the final outcomes uncertain.
Bonta called the administration “historic in its unlawfulness, in its willingness to trample over our Constitution.” He said he has sued the second Trump administration 82 times, averaging more than once a week.
Bonta pointed to the Supreme Court’s rebukes of Trump policies such as tariffs — though the majority-conservative high court has also handed President Donald Trump major victories, expanding his power over the federal bureaucracy and upholding key elements of his immigration agenda, for instance.
White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson called California’s lawsuits “frivolous” in a statement and said the attorney general “should focus on addressing problems in his own state.”
